What are your recommendations for keeping a WordPress installation Secure?

Do not have a username of admin.
Try not to have the first user in your database with an ID of 1.
Pick a good hosting provider – shouldn’t be paying less than $5 per month.
Forms (search form) is a vector for SQL injection attacks so try to limit usage
Don’t let people upload files to your site
Try to use SSL as often as possible
Strong passwords on WP users, FTP, cPanel
Back up on a regular basis
If you are hacked, make sure you change ALL of the passwords for users on your site and all passwords associated with your hosting. Use a strong password.

What are the options for video hosting with WordPress?

http://wistia.com/hello – analytics are great – can lock down the iframe so you can only watch it from a certain URL
Do not upload videos to your site. It slows everything down and eats your bandwidth. Leave it to the experts.

banner Don’t forget there will be no meeting in December, we’ll resume meetups in January. We’re still looking for speakers and volunteers, don’t be shy!

The WordPress Edmonton Directory Launches

So you’re planning your next big website project but you’re not sure if you need a full service web shop, a freelance developer, a contract designer or maybe just a consultant to get you started. Don’t worry, you’re not alone.

Web projects have many different moving parts and we’d like to help you find the best person or people to help your project run smoothly. That’s why we’ve created the WordPress Edmonton Professional Directory. The Directory is a fluid list of current WordPress shops, developers, designers and consultants working in and around the Edmonton area.

We’re going to try and keep this list as updated as possible and do our due diligence to make sure everyone on the list is legit. However, we take no responsibility if you hire someone from the Directory and the project goes wrong. That, my friend, is your baby to deal with. That being said, if the project goes smashingly right (which I’m sure it will), we will accept great praises and cases of beer for our efforts 🙂

Check out the WordPress Edmonton Professional Directory or submit yourself into the directory using our Directory Submission Form.
